Something different

Written by Zack on August 16th, 2011

Leading up to my Minnesota Strongman contest I was doing any and all cardio I could do.  I did a lot of walking, biking and running…and I enjoyed it.  I love the summer time, the warm weather and exercising in general.  I don’t know how I came across the idea or why, but one day I started thinking about triathlons.  First off wether I’m 270 or 230 I realize that I’m not the ideal body type to compete in triathlon and I’m ok with that.  Right now I’m intrigued by the challenge, the mental toughness it would take to fight through the fatigue and push your body to the limit.

My first response was to check the web and see what conests are coming up and how soon I can get in one.  I’ve learned through competiting in powerlifting, strongman and watching Josh in bodybuilding you have to put yourself out there to find out what it’s really all about and that’s what I intend to do.  Unfortunatly I’m too late to compete in anything this year, but I’ve got my eye on a couple contests next year with a grand finale of the 70.3 Half Ironman in Kansas in June 2012.

What will happen to me?  I’m wondering that right now.  I was ok with dieting down to 231 for a strongman contest, but if I begin training for this triathlon what will happen to my size and strength?  I plan on continuing my lifting with Josh and I want to stay strong, because that is what I do and who I am.  It’s been my persona for 10+ years.

What about strongman and powerlifting?  I still love strongman, but I’m not in love with it right now.  The events are awesome and contests are fun, but I don’t have the same desire to compete in the sport like I did 3 years ago.  Powerlifting is something that I never grow tired of, I’d love to train for a meet with Josh and possibly compete at 242 or maybe even 220.  We’ll have to see what happens.

Minnesota’s Strongest Man -

Looking back I’m very happy that this contest is behind me.  The biggest thing for me was making weight, I weighed 230 at my weigh in.  It took a ton of effort and concentration and discipline to get there.  After making weight I proceeded to down a footlong subway and then headed to Red Lobster for the Admiral’s Feast as well as various appetizers and desserts.  I slept good and I was ready to go the morning of the contest, nerves didn’t really hit me until 2 hours before the start.  My mind was racing, wondering if I trained hard enough, how my diet would effect me, if my bicep was completely healed.  Well here is what happened

Axle Press – Lucked out and got to go last on this event due to sending my entry in early.  2 guys hit 10 reps, I’d been hitting that with a straight bar in the gym so I was pretty confident.  Went out and nailed 12 reps in 30 seconds! – WIN

Yoke – Great event for me and another win!

Keg Toss – New event for me, but they seemed light enough and that was the problem.  I had the wrong trajectory and missed with three kegs – Last Place

Keg, Stone and Sled Medley – Because I took last on the Keg toss I had to go first on the medley and I think I picked the wrong lane.  I finished in under a minute but ended up 3rd

Truck Pull – I still had a chance of winning the contest with some help from the other competitors, but that didn’t happen.  Took 4th.

Overall I took 3rd, but I’m still disappointed with that result.  Had been better prepared for the kegs it would have been a win for, but live and learn.  It was nice to compete, stay healthy and prove to myself that I could cut to 231 and  still be strong.
